This serene Hunterdon woodland, close to Kugler Woods, contains a magnificent
timber stand of Virginia Pine, Eastern Cedar, and mixed hardwoods. The
24-acre conservation easement was purchased entirely with funding from
Green Acres and with
negotiation
assistance from HLTA. A public pathway runs along the edge of the property
and will eventually be connected to other preserved land. HLTA has responsibility
for monitoring the easement in perpetuity.
When Marguerite Martin and her husband bought this land in 1951, there
was no water, no heat and no kitchen sink. They started a chicken farm
and made a home in the old farmhouse. Mrs. Martin decided to preserve
her land because "I'm conscious of the fact that houses are just
coming up everywhere. It's just one housing development after another."
About her property, Mrs. Martin said, "I'd like to see it just stay
the way it is. I've loved it and I don't want to see it changed."
